No Poverty

To end poverty in all its forms everywhere by 2030

Achieving the ambitious goal of eradicating extreme poverty worldwide by 2030 is a cornerstone of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Over recent decades, there has been remarkable progress in reducing extreme poverty, defined as living on less than $2.15 per person per day at 2017 purchasing power parity.

However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic marked a pivotal moment, undoing much of this progress. Shockingly, the number of people living in extreme poverty increased by nearly 90 million, defying earlier predictions.

Even before the pandemic, the momentum in poverty reduction was slowing. By the close of 2022, projections indicated that 8.4 per cent of the world’s population, totaling up to 670 million individuals, could still be grappling with extreme poverty. This setback effectively wiped out approximately three years of progress in poverty alleviation efforts.

If current trends persist, an estimated 7 per cent of the global population—around 575 million people—could remain ensnared in extreme poverty by 2030, with a disproportionate concentration in sub-Saharan Africa.

Another alarming revelation is the resurgence of hunger levels to those last observed in 2005. Equally troubling is the persistent rise in food prices across a greater number of nations compared to the period from 2015 to 2019. This dual challenge of poverty and food security presents a critical global concern that demands urgent attention.
